About
Ester Andújar embodies a fearless approach to art.
Her latest album, Inner Songs, is a deeply personal exploration of emotion and creativity, blending jazz, soul and contemporary influences into a vibrant mosaic of sound. With an impressive collection of compositions, Inner Songs showcases Ester's ability to create music that resonates on both an emotional and intellectual level. With each note, she invites the listener into her world, where honesty and artistic mastery intertwine.
Born in Valencia, Spain, Ester's art reflects a lifetime immersed in music. Her voice, an instrument of infinite subtlety, navigates through soulful melodies, dynamic improvisations and electrifying scat. From her early days fronting the jazz and blues band Black Train to her international recognition as one of Spain's most exceptional vocalists, Ester has built a career defined by innovation and passion.
Ester's previous albums trace her remarkable evolution as an artist. Her debut, Tristeza de Amar (2002), revealed her ability to tackle complex jazz pieces with elegance. Her second album, Celebrating Cole Porter (2005), recorded in New York with an international ensemble, showed her mastery of the American Songbook, combining timeless melodies with modern sensibilities.
With Páginas Preciosas (2008), he ventured boldly into new creative territories, producing a deeply personal and groundbreaking collection of original compositions in Spanish and Valencian.
Both critics and audiences have praised Ester's ability to bring authenticity and innovation to each performance. As Pablo Sanz wrote in Scherzo: “Andújar's voice has already secured her place among the aristocracy of female jazz vocalists. Her refined technique and expressive capacity are combined with a rigorous command of language and an impressive stage presence”.
Ester's music has taken her to prestigious stages around the world, from Europe to the Middle East, often in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes. Whether creating original works, reinterpreting jazz standards or seamlessly blending languages and traditions, Ester's artistry is a beacon of innovation in contemporary jazz.
With her new album, Inner Songs, Ester consolidates her position as a voice of our time. The album reflects her personal and artistic evolution, presenting a mature and multifaceted singer. Her ability to perform in Valencian, English, Spanish and Portuguese underscores her global connection and vocal versatility. In this album, Ester delves into her emotions with poetic compositions about the passing of time, everyday joys and the indelible traces of love. Her enigmatic lyricism and her ability to share her inner world make Inner Songs both an intimate and universal experience.
For Ester, jazz is more than a label; it is a medium of expression that she proudly embraces.
This album embodies her vision of “auteur jazz”: a narrative, personal and poetic form of jazz. Supported by talented musicians, she achieves a serene and elegant sound characteristic of 21st century jazz. Inner Songs also reveals Ester's facet as a “protest singer”, with songs such as “Les dones que ens falten”, which raises her voice against gender violence, and “República”, a reflection on historical memory.
With crystal clarity in an opaque world, Ester reaffirms that music can be an act of courage and commitment without losing its artistic essence.
With each performance and recording, Ester continues to redefine the boundaries of vocal jazz, forging a path all her own.
Ester is a singer-songwriter, jazz musician and global. (…) A poet, if I may be allowed to be obvious. (…) and a “protest singer” emerging like an orchid in the mud, or in the desert, her velvet blue voice crying out against sexist violence (“Les dones”) and oblivion (“República”), for the sake of Historical Memory. Where others deny the genre, Ester asserts herself as a jazz singer, (…). This is the jazz of the 21st century: serene, elegant, subtle... (some would say “minimalist”, I would not). The listener must take distance and perceive the painting as a whole before accessing the detail. With this, Ester bets on a pure and crystalline beauty in a world that is neither pure nor crystalline, but corrupted and nebulous (…).
Jose Maria “Chema” Garcia Martinez, Rio de Janeiro, October 2, 2024
“(…) Andújar’s voice is already part of the aristocracy of our female vocal jazz. Her refined technique and expressive capacity contrast with a rigorous knowledge of the language and a surprising command of the stage.”
Pablo Sanz, Scherzo. No. 244, September 2009
