ESTER ANDÚJAR

Ester Andújar embodies a bold approach to Art.

Her latest album, Inner Songs, is a deeply personal exploration of emotion and creativity, blending jazz, soul, and contemporary influences into a vibrant sonic mosaic. Featuring an impressive collection of compositions, Inner Songs showcases Ester's ability to create music that resonates on both emotional and intellectual levels. With every note, she invites the listener into her world, where honesty and artistic mastery intertwine.

Born in Valencia, Spain, Ester's art reflects a lifetime immersed in music. Her voice, an instrument of infinite subtlety, navigates soulful melodies, dynamic improvisations, and electrifying scat. From her early days leading the jazz and blues band Black Train to her international recognition as one of Spain's most exceptional vocalists, Ester has built a career defined by innovation and passion.

Ester’s previous albums trace her remarkable evolution as an artist. Her debut, Tristeza de Amar (2002), revealed her ability to approach complex jazz pieces with elegance. Her second album, Celebrating Cole Porter (2005), recorded in New York with an international ensemble, showcased her mastery of the Great American Songbook, blending timeless melodies with modern sensibilities.

With Páginas Preciosas (2008), she boldly ventured into new creative territories, producing a deeply personal and groundbreaking collection of original compositions in Spanish and Valencian.

Both critics and audiences have praised Ester’s ability to bring authenticity and innovation to every performance. As Pablo Sanz wrote in Scherzo: “Andújar’s voice has already secured its place among the aristocracy of female jazz vocalists. Her refined technique and expressive ability combine with a rigorous command of the language and an impressive stage presence.”

Ester’s music has brought her to prestigious stages worldwide, from Europe to the Middle East, often in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes. Whether creating original works, reinterpreting jazz standards, or seamlessly blending languages and traditions, Ester’s artistry is a beacon of innovation in contemporary jazz.

With her new album, Inner Songs, Ester solidifies her place as a voice of our time. The album reflects her personal and artistic evolution, presenting a mature and multifaceted singer. Her ability to perform in Valencian, English, Spanish, and Portuguese underscores her global connection and vocal versatility. In this album, Ester delves into her emotions with poetic compositions about the passage of time, everyday joys, and the indelible marks of love. Her enigmatic lyricism and ability to share her inner world make Inner Songs both an intimate and universal experience.

For Ester, jazz is more than a label; it is a medium of expression she embraces with pride.

This album embodies her vision of "authorial jazz": a narrative, personal, and poetic form of jazz. Supported by highly talented musicians, she achieves a serene and elegant sound characteristic of 21st-century jazz. Additionally, Inner Songs reveals Ester’s "protest singer" side, with songs like “Les dones que ens falten,” raising her voice against gender violence, and “República,” a reflection on historical memory.

With crystal-clear clarity in an opaque world, Ester reaffirms that music can be an act of courage and commitment without losing its artistic essence. As noted by a critic from Jazz es Ruido: “Ester Andújar’s voice shines above the music and lyrics. She is my favorite voice in Spanish jazz, and the favorite of many others as well.”

With each performance and recording, Ester continues to redefine the boundaries of vocal jazz, forging a path that is entirely her own. Whether on record or live, she offers a musical experience that is both intimate and transformative.

(alguno diría “minimalista”, yo no).

Pablo Sanz, Scherzo. Nº 244, septiembre 2009
